Amateur boxing is a variant of boxing practiced from the age of 11 years to 40 years old by both boys and girls and can ultimately lead to representation at the Olympic Games. Amateur boxing bouts are short in duration, comprising three rounds of three minutes, at elite level, each with a one-minute interval between rounds. The winner is the boxer that lands the highest number of point-scoring blows, based on number of clean punches landed. Also, this short format allows tournaments to feature several bouts over several days, unlike professional boxing,
where fighters can wait for several months between bouts. A referee monitors the fight from within the ring to ensure that competitors use only legal blows on the target area. The referee also ensures that the boxers do not use foul tactics, to prevent the opponent from punching, or excessive holding (if this occurs, the referee calls ‘break’. Repeated infringements of the rules can result in a boxer being penalized with a formal warning, or ultimately, disqualified). Referees have the power to stop the bout if a boxer is seriously injured, or if one boxer is significantly dominating the other. Nowadays, amateur boxing is sometimes referred to as Olympic-style boxing.
